How to improve the food and food education at a school

ENG 101
How to improve the food and food education at school
Jose F. Torres

The quality of food that our kids are eating nowadays is not the best. The ingredients that make up the food, usually does not come from nature. There are many chemicals, fatty ingredients and sugary beverages that make up the food that our kids are eating today, I am concern for the fact that my daughter will soon join the education system and I am worry of the kind of food she will consume in the school. The fact that obesity is a disease that has many parents, like me, worry of what kind of preventive measures schools are taking to ensure that kids are eating better these days.
Before any measure is taken, we have to take certain responsibility of our children’s nutrition. Education starts at home we should teach our kids a healthy diet, lead by example. However, the minute our children enter school property is out of our hands their daily food in-take should be supervised and carefully planned. Unfortunately, school budgets are reduced; hiring a professional nutritionist in order to teach our children the proper way to a healthy diet is a wish that I think every parent must have.
When we were children, we never thought that fast food was a way to slowly are killing us; but with new research and science advancing in gigantic steps, we can now see how an innocent looking hamburger is made with killing ingredients that will attacks every single organ in our body. The way a hamburger is process in order to make it marketable and cheaper, it seems taken out of a book of horrors. Processed meat (specially the one in a fast food restaurant) does not come from a single cow; it comes from many cows and many parts of their body that we cannot consume. The very thought that “strange” meat is put together is a scary thoughts, no wonder there are many cases of e-coli infections or other kinds of weird bacteria disease.
We become used to eat in a hurry, we lead a very stressful life and work ethics that we neglect on how properly protect our health. I think food, especially bad food, has become our enemy. Economically speaking, junk food is cheaper than healthy or organic foods, and since our wallets are a little tight lately; we tend to choose economy versus quality. For example; if I want to spend $20 on fruit I might get a few apples, oranges and pears; and if the strawberries are not in season that would cost a bit more. In the other if I take the same $20 I might get a bucket of chicken, mash potatoes and a few biscuits; and that meal my whole family will eat and I still would have some money left. Even though it might not be the best decision, my wallet says otherwise.
I think the best solution is to make organic food more accessible to people, or maybe we can grow it ourselves, with no chemical added to make it bigger or grow faster (as they do to chickens). Try to get this kind of food directly from organic farms and introduce it in the daily food system.
